Checkpoint: Swift Current, SK

Mission Control...

This is Eco1...

We have reached Swift Current and have set camp. That's 130 km today and our projected prairie average distance.

Weather: Mostly sunny today with rain clouds showering everything but us it seemed. The 25 km/h SW wind blew over our starboard side for most of the day then gave us a slight push near the end.

Saw my first Canadian oil pumping staion and storage tank in Saskatoon - not Alberta. Saw quite a few, actually, scattered over rolling farmland. Then I saw a row of 14 big wind generators to the south.

Don't let anyonw tell you that south-western Saskatchewan is flat! There's hill in this part of the country that have a way of slowing you down if you're cycling.

Wildlife: Saw a coyote yesterday and a dead badger today. The prairie dogs (I guess the critters would be) are everywhere it seems. They're fun to watch as they stand beside their ground holes on hind legs, scouting around. When the cross the highway they'll run a few steps then hop a couple, trying to look around, run, hop, run. They look like undersized squirrels, lean, with a short tail and tan coat.

That's about it for now as I look to see what downtown Swift Current has to offer a young Econaut on a Sunday night.

Doubt we'll make Moose Jaw by tomorrow night, but we're staying on #1 highway tomorrow and will camp in that general direction.

This is Eco1 Over and Out.

Glad to hear things are ok, and that the ecorocket is firing on all boosters. The road has sure given the ecorocket a beating, but you guys have pulled her through...!
You guys must also have legs like tree stumps by now? It is almost surprising that you both are still so healthy. Do you guys have a strict diet and stretching program?

Jennifer,

You have the best questions.

Stretching? Yeah, maybe I should be stretching. I did it once in the evening. Hurdler' stretch I think it was. It's mostly thighs and butt. Any suggestions?

Diet. In the morning it's either dried fruit, nuts and granola, orquick oatmeal. It's nice to have a cup of coffee, but not absolutely necessary.

Lunch is either trailmix, some energy bar, veggie sandwich, or hamburger. For dinner it's usually some rice or pasta meal for carbohydrates - energy storage for the next day. Tonight I couldn't find a grocery store open in Swift Current, so I stopped at Tim Horton's for a turkey sandwich, a chocolate glazed donut and a small coffee.

During the day I'll have one or two energy bars (Clif bars are better than Powerbars in my book)and drink 3 to 4 litres of lime Gatorade. At night I drink a 1 litre high-concentrate protein drink the body builders drink to help repair my muscles as I sleep.

I'm losing weight and gaining leg and butt muscle (want to do a hemp jeans commercial at the end of this expedition), and find there's lingering stiffness and pain in the morning that I basically shut out of my mind.

Kids, it's so important to drink a lot of water when you're exercising - all the time, really. Eight glasses a day.

Thanks, Jennifer!

Wow, that sounds like a lot of food you are eating Major Dude! What about Captain Utopia? Does he eat food too?

I think stretching is very important before exercise class, and afterwards. However we have not take protein drinks for rebuilding yet.

Did you get any scratches on your ecorocket?

Jennifer,

No scratches on the EcoRocket, but some small bumps and bruises. It seems the wooden outer shell (the fairing) likes to expand and contract a bit depending on the moisture level. It does have a slightly different shape every day.

I'll let Captain Utopia answer your diet question.
