Checkpoint: Medicine Hat

Mission Control...

This is Eco1...

We've reached Medicine Hat after much rain and wind and have set camp near the TransCanada highway.

The hotel idea didn't quite work out, alas. I'll call our connection in town 'John Smith' to protect his identity.

The contact phone call went something like this...

Major Dude: Hi. Could I speak to John Smith, please.

John Smith: (long silence)

MD: Hello?

JS: Who is this?

MD: My name is Bill Pocock. I was given your name by Steve Todd.

JS: Don't know him.

MD: Is this John Smith?

JS: (silence) What's this about?

MD: Well, there was some mention that you could help find us a hotel for tonight?

JS: (more silence) Oh, yeah... I know what this is about. You helped some kids today or yesterday somehow.

MD: We talk to kids about Global Warming across Canada?

...

Anyway, after the initial awkwardness, he did offer to pay for a hotel room for us because of the kid angle. I decined because we couldn't keep an eye on the EcoRocket if we were in a hotel which didn't have a place for it. Mr. Smith gave us directions to a nearby campground and we said our goodbyes.

Tomorrow' checkpoint is a bit of a myster at this point as we understand the Saskatchewan roads are not like the superb Alberta full-sized shoulders. The TransCanada highway is serious business in terms of speed and traffic, but our options for side roads don't look good when I look at the map. Seems like there's precious little 'official campgrounds'. Ah, the days of tenting in someone's front yard or pasture land may be upon us!

Hopefully the signal will be good Saskatchewan.

Time to change out of my wet clothes!

This is Eco1 Over and Out.
