After talking to some cyclists at MEC yesterday, I've come up with a basic route from Toronto to St. John's. It may change based on local info and Mission Control guidance as I go, but I need to nail something down and, so, here it is.
Basically, I'm sticking to the St. Lawrence River...
1) Go east on Lakeshore road and other such out of Toronto, staying close to Lake Ontario.
2) Continue close to Lake Ontario on either the 2 highway or Kingston Rd. - not sure of the names. Though the lake hugging road is clearly evident on Google Maps, no name is given. Don't have my hard copy official Ontario map with me at the moment (notice the mad chaos of this note?).
3) Continue along Lake Ontario into Quebec until just short of Montreal. Then head north to the ferry at Oka. Cross over the water and hug the northern coast above the island of Montreal. At Charlemange, this north coastal road reconnects with the main of St. Lawrence and becomes hwy 138. I intend to take 138 along the north shore to Trois Rivieres.
4) At Trois Rivieres I will attempt to cross the bridge to the south side and continue, hugging the south coast of the St. Lawrence on hwy 132.
5) I will follow the southern coast on hwy 132 for many kilometres as it opens into the Gulf of St Lawrence.
6) At Mont-Joli, I will turn inland on hwy 132 west and enter New Brunswick near a town called Tide Head.
7) At this point, I'll begin to hug the northeastern coast of NB on hwy 11 to Bathurst.
8) At Bathurst, I'll head south, inland on Hwy 8 until it meets hwy 11. Then I'll continue along hwy 11 to Shediac Parish. Here, I'll hug the coastal road until I reach the Centennial Bridge.
9) I hope to cross over the bridge on the courtesy land taxi/trailer for bikes onto PEI. I'll spend a day on PEI, then take the ferry across into Nova Scotia toward Pictou.
10) I'll take the short hwy 106 and rejoin the TransCanada, heading due east on Hwy 104.
11) I'll continue on the 104 until it turns into hwy 105 on Cape Breton. I'll follow 105 to Sydney.
12) at Sydney I'll catch the ferry to Newfoundland's Port-aux-Basques.
13) I plan to follow TransCanada Hwy 1 all through Newfoundland and to heck with the consequences until...
14) Final arrival in St. John's estimated for Mid-September.
...So that's the plan at the moment. Sorry I can't give more detail on the Ontario route names - but I don't know either until I look at the paper copy.
