Checkpoint: Port Hope, ON

MIssion Control....

This is Eco1....

I have set camp toniight on the shore of Lake Ontario in Port Hope. Made better time than I thought I would reaching Toronto escape velocity. About 100 km which is pretty good after a week off and going solo. I'd be happy with that distance everyday, but hope for more.

Thanks for the route idea for taking hwy 2, Doc. Got me far. Other than the general UPdownUPdown roller-coaster experience and road construction it's a very enjoyable route.

Speaking of which....

ROUTE CHANGE: Katie and especially sister Sue won't like this, but in New Brunswick I've decided to change course and head south with the St. John River (transCanada route until PEI) instead of the northern and coastal route I planned. A couple of Maritimers I met today convinced me of it.

So, Doc, please tell Katie I can't go to the Miramichi Summer Camp now. My apologies for changing my mind.

I wanted to see the Pickering Nuclear Reactor and was sad to zoom past in a rush. But what do you know? A laid-back cat I met on the beach here pointed to a nuclear facility a couple of baseball throws away from my tent. Cat even pointed out a big pile of low-level radioactive sand under a big tarp (one baseball throw away) that his construction company dig up because it was contaminated.

Major Dude: So, did they give you any safety equipment when you dug it up?

Cat: Hey, I get a cheque every week you know?

So, I'll grab a photo of the nuclear facility next door in the morning. Seems hard to tell what it is from the outside. Maybe that's why nobody minds me camping here.

Oh, look, it glows....(kidding)

Oh, listen...a train horn (not kidding).

This is Eco1...Over and Out.

Congratulations on a successful launch, and for making a most impressive solo debut today! Port Hope, no less. A suitably named destination.

Roger that on your intended route change out East.

One thing Mission Control failed to supply you with... ear plugs, to somewhat block out those beloved trains as they thunder through your nightly docking ports. Sorry about that, Major Dude.

Sleep well, and best of luck tomorrow.
