Checkpoint: Florenceville, NB

Mission Control...

This is Eco1...

Have set camp in the dense forest a stone's throw from #2 hwy at the 162 km mark from the Quebec boarder.

The tent is pitched on what looks like an old, overgrown pioneer road much like the one at Ma's place. In a word it's 'spooky' with all the dead sprice tree limbs streaching out to grab me. It reminds me of the headless horseman tale, riging throught the night in seach of a head to replace his own. Great, now I'm gonna have nightmares...

I've cached the food and toiletries (tied up a tree limb with a rope) and have bear spray and escape tent hole knife at the ready. Hope the loud sound of nearby passing trucks will scare wildlife off. Hey, I like wildlife, just not snooping around camp at night. Not fun.

There's a spider living in the nose cone, spinning webs. Been ther for at least a week, so decided to call it 'Freddie'. Was watching Freddie today and almost went off the road. Haven't started talking to Freddie...yet.

Met and talked with a group of boy scouts this morning in Grand Falls. Good kids. Should've spent more time with them, but I hadn't had my morning coffee yet. I need that coffee.

Could have gone further but just felt exhausted from the heat at the top of the mountain I'm on. Guess I'm not really crossing the Appalachian (?) Mountains as much travelling south over each one of them. Can't drink enough water. Stopped to rest for hours twice today.

I'll try to get up early and on the road tomorrow in hopes of reaching close to Fredericton tomorrow night. It all depends on the on whether it's UPdown or flat. Descending is fun, but ascending whipes me out in this heat/humidity..

This is Eco1...Out.

Dude!
Have been enjoying your blog posts so much I can't believe you're in New Brunswick already. Hope the heat isn't wiping you out too much and that your leg is holding up alright! iu

Cine,

I find it a bit hard to believe too. New Brusnwick is certainly a big province, though.

It's 300 hours (07/26) and I'm amazed I can get to sleep with the trucks passing by.

I think something's sniffing around my tent outside. I can pretty much tell the size of the animal by the length and quickness of the sniffing. Slow, long sniffs are bad. The sniffing sounds like a raccoon.

I don't feel like - wait...don't feel like going outside at the moment.

Could you find out if there's wolves in this area? And why do I wait until now to ask?!

In 2000, the gray wolf was deemed "extirpated" from New Brunswick. Meaning wiped out.

And although there are raccoons, skunks and, yes, black bears in parts of NB, please be extra vigilant and watch out for.... the infamous Woodland Jumping Mouse. When it happens, you'll know.

Happy trails. Stay hydrated!

Best regards to "Freddie".

Thank you very much for the wolf update. It's funny the things that run through your head in aforest camp at 3 am....

I survived to night - the the critters were squirrels to be honest. He, he...
