Mission Control...
This is Eco1...
Have made foothold on Cape Breton and set camp in woods at Melford. It's a pleasant evening with the sun still high in a clear sky. And the ever-present sound of speeding cars and trucks nearby.
A kind journalist (Charlie ten Brinke of TransAction) tracked me down and took my picture in Antigonish at lunch break. She actually knew all the head day camp honchos in town. After a few well-placed calls, regretted to say that all the kids were off to the water park today. I can't compete with waterslides and bumper boats.
Cape Breton is actually a separate land mass north east of Nova Scotia connected by an artificial roadway and bridge.
As I was about to pass over the bridge, an RCMP cruiser pulled me over. The constable said, "Meet me at the information centre" just inside Cape Breton. Skipper, you can only imagine what imagined crimes raced through my head at that moment as each pedal stroke across that bridge led me to my doom. Was the great adventure to end here? Had I come a bridge too far.
I pulled up behind the cruiser and came to a stop (whoops I forgot to hand signal it!). Well, as it turned out, this wasn't to be my moment of doom after all. Constable Susan of Canada's finest pulled me over to suggest I replace my lost flag for greater visability.
That was the official version, but I suspect it was the customary welcome for all special visitors to the Cape's friendly shores. That and the good-humoured 'Ceremonial Frisking' for the benefit of tourists. I enjoyed our talk a great deal and must confess that Constable Susan is by far the cutest police officer I've ever seen - is it okay to say that?

Major Dude and Constable Susan
I can only hope that Constable Susan will consider it her duty to check up on my safe progress along the 105 TCH tomorrow. I fear the worst along this perilous highway without an RCMP escort. I hope she thinks of the kids.
To bed and to sleep. To sleep, perchance to dream.

Eco 1... This is Mission Control...
Congratulations on your safe arrival in Cape Breton. Fingers crossed that Constable Susan will be able to keep tabs on your progress.
And then... Newfoundland soon awaits!
A quick scan of Newfoundland seems to show a number of cycle shops in Corner Brook, should the need arise. I'm not attempting to jinx anything, but thought you'd like to know!
That's a big 10-4, Skipper.
Need the RECON for the final push.
Locals say there's a storm passing over The Rock. And Rock winds can push you over the edge and then some.
Will keep eyes and ears to the ground for this one.
Eco1...Over.
