Last night Melvin and Patty let me tag along to the Legion Hall in the town of Jefferie's on the coast. A tradition called 'Come Home Year' has begun in a number of communities here. The legion hosted a local Come Home Year event. Newfoundlanders who are living off the island are encouraged to return to their Island communities for a week or two and remember Home.
I had a good time and was glad to be inside the Legion when a monsterous Thunderstorm hit. It rained cats and dogs!.
Recovering this morning I pushed on toward the park with the mountains never far off to the east and plenty of hills for the highway climbs and thrilling descents. Met a number of very nice and supportive people on the highway who stop for photos. Sometimes I don't stop because I'm in a bad mood (mechanical problems). At these times I don't want to talk to anyone. The mood passes, but it's often hard to be cheery when I'm struggling. I passed a couple who stepped out of their van to take a photo and as I passed them the guy tossed a Toonie (2 dollar coin) on my chest. I grabbed it and waved 'thanks', but wished he hadn't done it. I get such sensory overload in a day, More and more I need to rest and read. Reading in the tent is the only order in my life.
There isn't much in terms of towns along the highway - they're mainly along the coastline five to ten kilometres west of the highway. So, each Irving or Esso gas station I pass is a potential oasis. Food, water and a morning coffee. Think I'll have to travel for three hours before I get my morning coffee.
Tomorrow will be another short day to the large west coast city of Corner Brook. I'm scheduled to do a CBC morning radio show interview on Tuesday (today's Sunday). I hope to pitch tent on the CBC radio lawn to make sure I'm at least physically there for the show.
Have started reading Don Quixote again. Maybe I'll finish it this time. It seems appropriate. This expedition would be terribly difficult without books - worth their weight.
End of Ship's Log entry.
