Ship's Log - August 12, 2007

Last night's bed of moss did the trick of patching me together. Tonight I've found me another mossy spot at Jack's Pond Campsite just 5 km south of Arnold's Cove.

Happy with today's early start and progress through three heavy rainstorms. Each ended with a sun shower. I'd get almost dry when the dark clouds zoomed in from nowhere and dumped on me yet again. My riding gear is still soaked, hanging on a line between trees and will likely still be soaked in the morning.

Somebody told me why the TCH ditches are so deep on the island: moose. Moose like to wander onto the highway at night - 715 moose collisions last year. So, appearently, the ditches serve as hopeful moose moats. Go figure.

TECHNICAL REPORT - Front Sprocket: The front crank sprocket's teeth have become sharp, the warn to nubs in a section of the wheel. This tends to make the chain come off easily (I can actually put it back on without stopping now), and causes the chain to slip in low gears. This slippage is getting progressively worse and make the remaining 50-odd hills left to climb a bit of a concern. There may come a point before St. John's where the sproket will. not move the chain forward in low gear. The Fix: I will increase the chain tension in hopes this will reduce slippage. There are no repair shops before St. John's.

I plan to cover less ground in the next two days (13-14th) due to the sprocket trouble and enter St. John's on the morning of the 15th as planned.

End Ship's Log entry.
