We've set camp 20 km north of Sault Ste Marie along highway 17. We should easily make the city by tomorrow witha Monday presentation at our second to last school before summer holidays.
I arrived in Sault Ste. Marie on my special mission to get a new rear wheel for the EcoRocket late at night on June 22 and camped overnight in the trees behind the Velorution cycle shop.
In the morning I met the big kahuna of Velorution, Andre Riopel, who's a great, fun guy and also the Green Party's candidate for the next election. None of the hardcore posse at this cycle Valhalla could figure out why the rear wheel seemed to just explode on us. In any case, Andre figured that the EcoRocket needed a stronger back wheel (not the first time I've heard that) and now would be a good time to get one.
So da boyz went to work on a fixin' up a special, hardcore wheel for us, a new tire, a patch kit, and three new tubes. Andre tossed in a Velorution water bottle for Utopia and was kind enough to pretty much give it all to us for what it cost him to buy the gear himself. Did I mention the uber coffee and butter tarts?
Sweet, huh? Wait there's more. In order to get back to the EcoRocket in Pancake Bay, In-Da-Haus artist extraordinaire, Jason Robert, air brushed me a snazzy 'Pancake Bay' hitch-hiking cardboard sign in order to flag down a ride (see picture of Jason and the sign he painted me!). Normally, I don't recommend hitch-hiking unless absolutely necessary, kids. And only then if you're an adult like Major Dude.
Well the sign worked its magic and I caught a lift froma fine fella, Neville Bodsworth, and lady, Lois Montbourquette, who we had met earlier in Wawa. It was a fun and entertaining ride back as Neville and Lois dropped me off at Captain Utopia's campground.
Then we were back on the road again along the scenic shores of Lake Superior. The water level of the lake has dropped almost 1 metre this summer and people don't seem to know why.
End Ship's Log entry.
