Ship's Log...
We've experienced a MAJOR BREAKDOWN on 17 highway approximately 100 kms north-west of Thunder Bay. We've set camp at the Savanna River Resort and have initiated repairs.
THE PROBLEM: In loose gravel, a small rock got lodged between our rear derailer arm and chain. This caused a chain reaction of desructive events. The derailer arm twisted, which caused the derailer spring arm to snap in half, and (worst) bent the chromoly frame where it attaches to the rear wheel.

I've been able to untwist the derailer arm to function (hopefully). I've braced the spring arm together with bolts and a metal plate. With some pipe and the adjustable wrench I've pretty much straightened the frame so the rear wheel can be secured to the frame. Unfortunately, in bending the frame back into place, I accidently squashed some of the frame threading where the derailer bolts onto the frame.

So, what's left to do is to re-thread this part of the frame. Pro machinists (like Scott Dawg) have a special tool to do this. As we're pretty much in the middle of nowhere, finding this special tool - in the perfect size - is...unlikely. My other option is to try to re-thread the frame opening using the can opener on my Swiss Army knife. You may be laughing, but I'm not joking. Also. It's almost impossible to see the thread opening because of the proximity of the fairing to figure out what part of the opening needs work. This is not an easy thing to do.
I'll try again tomorrow. I just hope it doesn't rain.
Anyway, the fishing's good here. One fellow caught 130 walleye today. Gee, isn't there some kinda limit on the number of fish you are allowed to catch?
End Ship's Log entry.
