Eco 1 here...
...reporting safe arrival at check point 2 at approx. 8pm. The firemen opened the big doors upon our approach and we drove it right in between to big fire engines like it was the batcave.
"Is there anything you need? Dinner? How about some prime rib?" YES!!!
The Econauts could barely get out of the EcoRocket after a rainy, windy first day of about 90 km all told. Now our hot tossed buns are on fire. Captain Utopia - who has run a few marathons - said the way our legs feel are worse than after a marathon. Wow.
Sunday Major Dude will go to the firehall to make some much needed repairs - move forward signal lights closer to nose so they aren't smashed off by peddling feet. Replace old mirror and add two more front and back, fix left signal switch, replace both top hatch edge guards, and a few other things. Thank goodness for Duct Tape.
Now Rob and Shannon have taken us into their fine apartment in Vancouver where the Econauts will recover from their first day.
Over and Out.

Great to hear that you made it through Day 1 safe and sound (if weary).
I hope and expect that the help you found at UBC Firehall #10 is indicative of the goodwill you will find all across this fine country.
Good luck with the repairs/mods and enjoy the rest!
Thanks, Rusty.
We're recovering now from day 1 with West Coast Rob, laughing and joking.
With protein and elecrolites in our systems, the muscle repair should begin. I would have been better if we had time to train, building specific muscles for the recumbent cycling, but...time ran out before the launch.
This means our muscles will be damaged by the grueling daily cycling, but won't have the rest days to recover and build stronger. The weekly rest days we scheduled are now gone due to the ordeal of crossing The Rockies - for a large part - on foot, pulling the EcoRocket by rope and harnesses.
As much of the Rockies lacks digital signal on the Rogers network (our BlackBerry service provider) - Telus is much better with very few non-signal areas (if any) - we will be without contact with the outside world for a long time after leaving Hope, BC. 'Hope' is a good name for a town on the edge of the mountains.
#10 guys are just great. They suggested we stay at other firehalls along the way. A good idea. I've never met a fireman or firewoman I didn't like.
My dad always said if you're ever in trouble, go to a firehall for help. Dad was right.
The firemen gave us a couple stickers to put on the EcoRocket. You better bet they're going on.

Glad to hear you are getting some rest before hitting the rockies Econauts! Staying at firehalls when possible is a great idea. Saw the pics & article from the parry sound paper!
