The First Submarines

Like the EcoRocket, the first submarines were made of wood.

Major Dude remembers visiting the shipyard in Barcelona, Spain where the great Spanish Armada was built. These pictures show some of the earliest wooden submarines ever made.

Ictineo I (replica).

Ictineo II (replica).

This submarine was originally constructed in 1862
from the plans of Narcis Monturiol I Estarriol (1819 -1886)
and that the original Ictineo II actually navigated
the waters in the Port of Barcelona. It dove to
90 feet and was intended for rescue work.

So does this mean you're going to have an armada of ecorockets, or is the ecorocket going to be able to travel underwater?

Thank you for your insightful questions, Rob.

Will the EcoRocket be able to travel underwater? Alas, no. Not the cross-Canada EcoRocket, anyway. That's for another Econaut yet to come.

The Econauts hope to create a vision in people's mind - of a better world here, now, where bicycles or velomobiles, like the EcoRocket, take the place of automobiles.

Econauts are a sort of autonomous collective, acting independently to help save the world. We are what we do. Every moment provides the opportunity to be or not be an Econaut.

O, what a dream to see the streets full of beautiful velomobiles! I'd love to see the long wooden submarine, Ictineo II, converted into a school bus with all the kids pedalling to and from school. You just have to believe.

But the most important thing is action.

Very interesting, Major Dude. I had no idea that there were wooden submarines, and before now, I was misled by science to believe that wood floats, making for poor submersability. Those antique submarines are quite sleek and beautifully well-crafted.

I wholeheartedly support your dream of a VeloNation.

Thanks, Katrocket.

There's room for everybody (especially coole Katrockets) on the Soul Train of Econaut Love.

All aboard!

That settles it: we're all quitting our jobs to live in the wooden submarine under the sea!
